When attempting to add a favorite in Internet Explorer you receive an "Unspecified Error"

This issue seems to be most prevalent after transfering settings from another computer or after redirecting your favorites folder to another folder, especially if it is on a different drive or network share.

In Widows Vista, Internet Explorer runs in protected mode. This is a security feature that, among other things, only allows Internet Explorer to save or modify data in a few specially marked locations on your computer.

You receive this error when your favorites folder has somehow lost the special setting that allows Internet Explorer to write to it.

To fix it, follow these steps:

  1. Click start
  2. Find command prompt, right-click it, and click Run As Administrator
  3. Browse to the folder that contains to your favorites folder (e.g.: cd %userprofile%)
  4. Type the following command, where favorites is the name of your favorites folder, and press enter:
    icacls favorites /setintegritylevel (OI)(CI)low
